How to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Holiday Waste

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers tips to help families save money, reduce waste, and keep recycling and trash workers safe during after the holidays.

What Should Go In Your Recycling Bin

  • Wrapping paper (without glitter)

  • Cardboard – Flatten boxes before putting them in carts or bins

  • Newspaper

  • Magazines

  • Plastic: only #1 and #2 containers Please rinse these out (you don’t have to put them in the dishwasher), and please don’t crush the cans (this makes it harder for the machines to sort them out)

  • Aluminum cans

  • Steel (tin) cans

  • Glass bottles and jars

What Should Not Go In Your Recycling Bin

Some items can cause severe problems at recycling facilities that aren't designed to handle them, including fire risk and worker injury. However you can recycle many of these items at drop-off sites, but they should not go in curbside recycling bins or carts. These include:

  • Tissue paper

  • Holiday light strings, cords, and other "tanglers"

  • Plastic bags, plastic film, and wrap

  • Batteries and electronics

Disposing of Christmas trees

To avoid damage to the equipment, you must follow these guidelines.  Trees that are not properly prepared will NOT be collected:

  • Place trees on the terrace or right of way area

  • Remove and discard tree bags

  • Remove all tree stands, ornaments, lights and other objects
